It didn't rain at all today! So wonderful :) We just got another weather phenomenon instead -- fog. It was like there was a cloud covering the city all day. I kept thinking that it would burn off, but it never did. The fog was kind of nice, though. It gave everything a very isolated, almost eery feel, which was cool. Salzburg is beautiful, no matter what, though. Seriously, the city is gorgeous. We walked to the center of the city from our hostel (probably about 20 min walk away), and did most of the major tourist attractions. We bought 24-hour "Salzburg Cards", which grant free admission to most museums, and free public transportation. It's a really good deal. We visited the birthplace of Mozart. Walked up through the catacombs in the mountain of St. Peter's abbey, which provided awesome views over the abbey and city through the little window holes. We took a trolley car up to the Hohensalzburg fortress, which is on a bluff directly overlooking the city. We wandered through the fortress, and learned about it's history. There was an audio tour, which was a bit entertaining at times. Like especially when we were up on the top of a lookout tower, and the guide would say something like, "do you see the church down to your right?" And we would just laugh, and be like, "no... all I see is a cloud bank..." Literally the entire tower was still covered in thick fog. I still really enjoyed the fortress, in spite of that, though. It was gorgeous up there.
We eventually left and headed back to the main square, where we saw yet another gorgeous cathedral with not one, two, or three organs but five. That's right, FIVE. And wandered through a few museums. You know another thing we're really good at? Looking at someone while they're speaking German at us, smiling, nodding, and saying "danke!" like we understood it. Did that at the Salzburg museum. We can totally pretend to not be American tourists with no idea what's going on. The museum was interesting. We're so cultured and informed of the art world. Somehow we went directly from that to the Panorama museum, which was nice - it was entirely the panoramic view of Salzburg we couldn't see from Hohensalzburg this morning :-) We eventually wandered home, dropped our stuff off, and headed to the grocery store across the street, where we picked up tons of fruit and veggies and bread and cheese and noodles and made the most fantastic stir fry ever. We're really good at improvisational cooking.
