Wow. The past two
days have gone by so fast…
So last you heard we were still in Arcidosso, couchsurfing
with Lorenzo. That was great, and I’m
really glad we went. I had a lot of fun
the night we stayed there, and I’m really glad we met Sally. That said, we
decided to leave a day earlier than we had planned, partly because there were
going to be a lot fewer buses out on Sunday, and partly because even though I
had had a good time, I still didn’t quite feel comfortable there, and I couldn’t
put my finger on why. So Kirstyn humored me, because she’s awesome like that,
and we took a bus to Grosseto, and then got a train to Rome. We arrived in Rome
in the evening with no place to stay for the night, and nowhere we had to
be. Not having any plan like that would
probably have stressed both of us out a few weeks ago. But now, we were both
completely calm and knew that everything would work out.
Coming to Rome, we had a couple of plans and backup plans
for finding a place to stay for the night. (1) message the guy we were planning
to couchsurf with the next 2 nights, and see if he happened to be able to host
us a night early. (2) find the Abbey Theater Irish pub, where our new friend
Sally said that she knew all the staff, and that one of them would probably let
us stay with them. Sally was awesome, and gave us a whole list of her
recommendations in Rome, and tried to hook us up with her friends for places to
stay. (3) find some hostel somewhere in the city.
With all those options, why would we be worried?? Anyway, we
wandered in the general direction of the Abbey Theater pub. Then we got a
message from our couchsurfing host, John, saying that sure, we could come a
night early, as long as we didn’t mind the house being a mess! John is awesome. We found his apartment, and he gave us a
little loft room. Ringing his doorbell at 7:55 after planning on meeting him at
8 (totally not on purpose, but hey, it worked out), a British voice answered
“my word, that’s punctual”, which sounded exactly like something Mark would say
J. Spent the rest of the
evening just chilling, talking to him. John is originally from the UK, but has
lived all over, and traveled all over.
Tonight was just so cool. Definitely one of my highlights of
this trip so far. There is something
just so liberating about getting off the train in a new city, having no idea
where you’re going to stay that night. But in spite of that, trusting that God
would take care of us, one way or another. Which he did! In a way better that
what we could have come up with. I was so inexplicably happy walking around
Rome. I like the city, and… I dunno. It was just a great evening.
